About Cindy Brick:

Cindy Brick is an editor, designer and writer who travels the world teaching about quilting and quilt history. A former editor for Quilter's Newsletter Magazine, she is also an AQS-certified textiles appraiser and professional quilt restorer. She has written many articles and five books, including Hanky Panky, the Stitcher’s Language of Flowers and the Fabric Dating Kit. Her latest book, Crazy Quilts, came out from Voyageur Press Feb. 2008; the first printing sold out within two months, and a second is underway. A sequel to Cindy’s Hanky Panky (now in its eleventh printing), Hanky Panky With A Flourish is now in the works.

Nearly all of Encyclopaedia Britannica's quilt-related entries are her writing; she also consulted for three television specials on quilting (appeared in person on one), and was on Simply Quilts to explain her Hanky Panky quilt method. (She will be taping an episode on Crazy quilts for The Quilt Show in Sept. 2008, and a series of shorts on various quiltmaking techniques this fall.)

Cindy is the “Old Things Considered” columnist for McCall’s Vintage Quilts, and a frequent contributor to other magazines. Cindy lives and works in Castle Rock, Colorado. For more on her books and products, including color photos, visit the Brickworks website or Brickworks’ new sister site, Classy Girl.

THE GOOD STUFF: QUILTS FROM THE 1860S…AND BEFORE
Description: Have you ever seen a Really Old quilt or fabric in the flesh? Brace yourself, because we’ll be viewing (and touching!) many 19th and even 18th century quilts, fabrics, tops and blocks, including an 1839 signed and dated Mosaic quilt top. Learn more about early textiles’ trademark colors, patterns and styles, including fugitive greens, ‘acid’ yellow and the granddaddies of all: turkey and madder reds. We’ll also discuss historic and social events that shaped the fabric world during the 1860s…and long before. Handout included.

WORKSHOP:
Saturday, Aug 23, 2008, 12 noon - 4:00pm. $32 class fee plus admission cost. Kit fee (optional), $24.95 paid to teacher during class
FLORA AND FAUNA: FLOWERS & ANIMALS FROM YOUR CRAZY LIFE
Cindy will introduce you to favorite ways to interpret flowers, animals and even birds and bugs on Crazy quilts. Along the way, we’ll visit the secret Language of Flowers; the symbolism of animals, birds and insects to quilters; and special techniques to imitate petals, fur and feathers. Plenty of examples, old and new, to give you inspiration. Then create your own secret messages and memories, using the pattern provided, or add to your current project. Pattern makes a small wallhanging or pillow cover to help you practice the techniques and styles learned in this class. The $24.95 kit includes both fabric kit and special animal/flora emblishment kit.

WORKSHOP:
Sunday, Aug 24, 2008, 12 noon - 3:00pm. $24 class fee. plus admission cost. Kit fee (optional), $19.95 paid to teacher during class
LACE PAINTING, SHADING AND OTHER EASY EMBELLISHMENTS
You don't have to be an expert to embellish! Give your quilts that professional look with the tricks and tips you’ll pick up from this learn-as-you work class. We'll explore painting, photo-transfers, stitching, beading, fabric manipulation and other easy techniques to add a one-of-a-kind touch to your favorite quilt...or commemorate a special event in your life. We'll also view vintage embellishments as early as 1834 (really!), and discuss antique quilt makers' favorite methods. Techniques work for a variety of patchwork styles, as well as wearables and quilt labels. Class will be all hand techniques, though some machine techniques may be demonstrated if time allows. Included: your own free transfer on fabric to embellish as you wish, plus a lace motif to paint. (A second transfer is included if the kit is purchased.) For all skill levels. Pattern and free transfer/lace motif provided. The $19.95 kit includes fabric, embellishments and more.
