Emerging Young Designer of the Year!!!


You are invited to compete in the 2007 EYDY™-Emerging Young Designer of the Year™ Fashion Competition. This 3rd annual design competition is held by invitation only. This competition is open only to current students in their junior or senior year of a fashion design program at selected colleges/universities in states listed below.
Student designers will compete for the EYDY™ Award, and winners will receive top sewing product prizes. Last year, over $37,000 in prizes were awarded to the winners.
By participating, the student will also represent his/her respective college or university.

Purpose For The EYDY™ Competition:
• Discover young talented designers and reward them for their creativity and ingenuity.
• Encourage careers in the fashion and sewing related industries.
• Provide a platform for recognizing these emerging designers, assisting them in making career contacts and displaying their talents.

Categories For Competition:
Art to Wear: Includes wearable art garments.
Evening Formal Wear: Includes evening gowns, ensembles suitable for black tie events.
Sportswear/Daywear: Includes business casual, coordinates, day outfits and ensembles. Does NOT include active wear.
Tailored Suits and Coats: Tailored business and tailored formal attire. All garments MUST be fully lined in this category.
Active Wear/Swimwear: Active sportswear and swimwear constructed from stretch knits.

Important Dates & Deadlines:
• April 15, 2007: Deadline to receive Form 1, all applicable materials and entry fees at the Sewing Dealers Trade Association/Round Bobbin offices in Des Moines, IA. MUST BE POSTMARKED BY APRIL 15, 2007.
• June 1, 2007: Deadline to receive Form 2 with photos of garments submitted on Form 1 sent April 15, 2007.
• July 15, 2007: On or about July 15, 2007, the finalists will be selected. Notification will be made by mail.
• September 21, 2007: Finals competition and fashion show in St. Charles, MO.

General Rules For Participation:
• Competition is open to junior and senior fashion design students at colleges/universities with programs in fashion design.
• Student must be enrolled in fashion design classes the academic year 2006-2007.
• Finalists are required to be present at finals competition in Saint Charles, MO to compete.
• Entry must be an original design created by the student.
• Pattern for entry must be student’s own design.
• Designer’s original pattern must be available for judges’ review.
• Entry must be an ensemble or full outfit.
• Student must undertake the design and do their own project with no outside assistance.
• Ensemble must be constructed solely by the student designer whose name is on the application.
• Student must attend a course of study and not be professionally employed in the fashion area.
• Student may enter one ensemble in each category.
• All required materials must accompany entry forms.
• A separate entry form must be submitted for each category.
• Student cannot model their own outfits.
• Student must provide their own model for finals show and judging.
• Entry forms must be postmarked no later than April 15.

Modeling Agencies
You will need to provide your own model for the EYDY’s Finals Competition and Fashion Show on September 21, 2007. The modeling agency below has graciously agreed to work with EYDY finalists in helping them obtain models on a complimentary basis for this event. Contact them directly with your needs, once you have been notified that you are an EYDY finalist. All arrangements for models are the sole responsibility of the student finalist. Finalists will not be allowed to compete in the EYDY Finals unless their garment is shown on a live model.

Application Procedure
• Construct an original design for the EYDY™ Competition.
• By April 15, 2007, complete Form 1 with signature from student’s respective fashion design program representative.
• Designate the category for the entry on application.
• Submit original technical display board (must be 8 ½” x 11”) with fashion sketch (color, front view), two technical sketches (front view and back view), fabric swatches, trims, and garment/ensemble description.
• Tech board must be 8 ½” x 11”.
• Student name must be on the back only of ALL tech boards and pictures.
• Student must put category on back of each item, tech board and photos.
• Copy of student ID must be submitted with application.
• By June 1, 2007, submit 3 photos of outfit/ensemble: 1-front view, 1-back view, and 1-close-up. Attach photos to Photo Submission Form.

Note: Tech boards, pictures or any other items submitted will NOT be returned. Please retain color copies of illustrations for your records.

Judging Criteria:
Preliminary Competition—Entries will be judged from the photographs and technical boards for the following: Creativity, Effectiveness of Design, Marketability/Reflects Trends, and Textile Usage. 15 pieces will be chosen in each category to compete in the finals competition.
Finals Competition—Entries will be judged on live models for the following: Fit, Creativity/Originality, Effectiveness of Design, Marketability/Reflects Trends, Textile Usage and Workmanship/Construction. Each category will have a 1st, 2nd and 3rd place winner.

Selection Procedure, Judging Entries
Preliminary & Finals Competition: Will be done by a jury composed of professionals from the fashion and sewing industry.

In Regards To The Competition Itself:
• Well-known professionals from the field of fashion and home sewing will judge creations at each level.
• In all matters concerning the course of the competition, the selection of the winners and settling disputes, the decision of the judges is final.
• All matters will be decided by a majority point system and is not subject to appeal.
• The anonymity of the candidates presented to the jury shall be preserved by all the institutions organizations involved.
• All awards will be presented at the EYDY™ Fashion Show the evening of Sept. 21, 2007.
• Designer student must be present to accept the awards.

Exclusion Cause
Entries will automatically be disqualified from the competition for the following reasons:
    1. Tech boards are the wrong size.
    2. If they do not comply with entry rules.
    3. If they are received after the deadline.
    4. If they give rise to any legal disputes with juries or sponsor organizations.
    5. If they give rise to any pressure toward jury members, and/or sponsors of this competition.
    6. Student finalist fails to be present at finals competition on Sept. 21, 2007 in Saint Charles, MO.

Insurance Specifications
The Sewing Dealers Trade Association and Round Bobbin Expo cannot be responsible in any way for entries lost in the mail, damage, loss or theft of entries, including technical boards, final projects, etc. Appropriate precaution will be taken for this kind of competition to help prevent such loss, but it is up to the student to insure (or not) what they submit.

Other Important Details
• Designer student and model will need to arrive for the competition no later than 8:30 a.m. on Sept. 21 at the Saint Charles Convention Center.
• Competition will be held at the Saint Charles Convention Center, Two Convention Center Plaza, Saint Charles, MO 63303.
• No one will be allowed in the dressing room during the judging or behind the stage at any time except for the designer and their model.
• Garment must be on hangers furnished by the designer.
• Designer and model will be responsible for their own expenses.
• All designers must be present for pictures after the fashion show.

Event Tickets
Fashion show tickets can be purchased by friends and relatives at www.roundbobbin.com for $5 each. All seats general admission.
Designer and models will NOT need to purchase an event ticket.
